Isaiah 53: Stryper

Isaiah 53 always reminds me of Bill. I admit that I didn’t really listen to a lot of Christian music growing up but there was one very popular Christian band from the 1980s that my friend Bill listened to and had a number of their tapes. I think we may have even done an air band to one of their songs in the 1980s. The band’s name was Stryper and they got their name from Isaiah 53. Isaiah 53: 5: "By His stripes we are healed." And this band Stryper actually was able to bring the Gospel message not only to Christian fans but they actually got radio play on real (not just Christian) radio stations and they opened for big name bands in that time period like Ratt and Bon Jovi. God used them to bring the gospel of Isaiah 53 to people who weren’t already Christians. And Acts 8 God uses Phillip to bring the gospel to the person from Ethiopia. And today, I encourage us to share the Good News of Isaiah with those we meet.

Judges 13:1-7: Strength

Covenants are important to the Lord. I am reminded of Samson. Samson was bound by a covenant without an expiry date (Jdgs 13:7) that he did not even willingly enter into (Jdgs 13, Cf. 1 Sam 1, Lk 1, Lev 27.28-29) and he struggled to keep. Samson was not to drink nor was he to defile himself. Samson was however a liar at times (Jdgs 16:7ff) and a killer (Jdgs 14:19). He visited prostitutes (Judges 16:1). He put himself and others ahead of God at times (Jdgs 14:17). Samson disobeyed his vows. Samson transgressed his covenant with God. The Lord did not forsake him though (Jdgs 16:22, Rom 3:3,4). At times Samson did follow the Lord’s direction. At times he experienced the blessings that accompanied his covenant. At times Samson drew on the strength of the Lord and was used greatly by God to accomplish His purposes. At other times Samson sinned. James V, the King of Scotland used to go around the country disguised as a common person. That is because he wanted to meet the everyday people of the country not just the rich and powerful. He wanted to see how the normal people lived. One day he was dressed in very old clothes and was going by a place known as Cramond Brig, when he is attacked by robbers who don’t know who he is.
