John 14:16: Election Results

Yesterday on this site I ranted a little bit about how elections play out in Canada in the twenty-first century. Our electoral system is designed so that we will elect someone to represent our community (riding). Every few years then we will evaluate the work they have done for our community and decide whether they will continue as our representative or not.

Recently, however, the majority of Canadians don't follow through on this responsibility. Instead we vote for or against a person (sometimes without even knowing their name) because we like or dislike some organization (party) that they belong to. Can you imagine if you could be fired from your job, not because of the work you do or do not do, but because you belonged to the YWMCA, Rotary, The Salvation Army, or some other organization? It doesn't make any sense.

Even more recently people have been hiring or firing someone from their jobs representing ridings because of the leaders of their political parties. Can you imagine if you were fired because someone didn't like the leader of an organization to which you belonged? Can you imagine if you were fired because someone someone didn't like me? This is what election night has become in Canada.

That all being said and to avoid this day's thought turning out to be the same as yesterday's thought, I thought I would draw an eternal parallel to this scenario: Your and my election to the Kingdom of God has nothing to do with our resumes. It has nothing to do even with the churches we are members of. It has everything to do with who our leader is. The only way to enter the Kingdom of God is through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. If he is our leader we will be elected to eternal salvation. It is to this end that I encourage us today. It is not too late. If you haven't joined Jesus' party, why not do so right now and then you will be guaranteed to share in his victory on the eternal election night.

Luke 24:38-34: Revelation of a King

James V, the King of Scotland used to go around the country disguised as a common person. That is because he wanted to meet the everyday people of the country not just the rich and powerful. He wanted to see how the normal people lived. One day he was dressed in very old clothes and was going by a place known as Cramond Brig, when he is attacked by robbers who don’t know who he is. Lanterns (Matthew 25:1-13, Psalm 146)

  The topics I chose from our Lenten list for today are “God has rescued us from the Dominion of Darkness”; “He has Freed Us from the Power of Sin”; the Kingdom of God is at hand. Do we believe that? Do we live that?   In theology we use the term ‘prolepsis’ to refer to the time when the Kingdom of God begins, which is now, the time between the resurrection of Christ and His return at the eschaton. This is the time in which we are living and as Christians it is our responsibility to be willing instruments of God to display what it means that He has rescued us from the Dominion of Darkness; He has Freed Us from the Power of Sin, that the Kingdom of God is at hand. But do we even actually believe that He has already done this? And if He has why does it not seem that the Sin and Darkness still reign?   We know the parable of the bridesmaids (holy ones) in the Bible who needed to keep their lanterns lit – because lit lanterns were to be there when the Bridegroom Jesus returns...
